EURAO and Friedrichshafen

IARU Region 1 is surprised and disappointed at the statement made by EURAO, asserting that IARU has refused to meet with EURAO at the Friedrichshafen Ham Radio event.

IARU has for many months been pressing EURAO to meet on a professional level to discuss and share views on amateur radio strategy. This against a background where CEPT has very little time to devote to amateur radio issues and certainly not to resolving differences of view between EURAO and IARU.

EURAO has shown itself reluctant to respond to this invitation, finally responding at the end of May proposing a meeting at Friedrichshafen and citing budget difficulties in meeting elsewhere.

It is totally impractical for IARU to hold the suggested one day meeting at Friedrichshafen and for EURAO to expect this to happen shows a misunderstanding of the depth of discussion required. Nor does electronic conferencing lend itself to this sort of meeting where establishing personal rapport is a key part of the objective.

With careful choice of meeting location, this can be done within one day, without overnight stays. IARU is deeply involved in the Friedrichshafen programme this year, but remains ready to hold the proposed meeting on another occasion anywhere in Europe.
