Gennady "Gene" Shulgin, RZ3CC (ex RA6FAD, UA9YX, UA3ACM and UZ3AU) passed away on 11 May aged 81. A prominent and highly respected figure in the Russian amateur radio world, he was decorated for his volunteer work after the Chernobyl disaster and the Armenian and Iranian earthquakes. Over the years Gennady Grigoryevich participated in a few DXpeditions, notably the first two 4J1FS operations from Malyy Vysotskiy (1988 and 1989), and in 1989 the first ever USA-USSR joint operation (US0SU, Ayon Island). He also joined Dmitry Kravchenko's 1980 archaeological expedition to Novaya Zemlya (EU-035), where he was active as R1P.
